Blog Post #12- Stereotypes
Stereotypes is a broad, oversimplified assumption made about members of a particular group. So, for example the stereotype that all blondes are dumb. Or that men are more athletic and better than women. They are assumptions. Stereotypes are common and can be used in the film industry when coming up with the plot. However, stereotypes do not only apply to the film industry. Stereotypes can be used when it comes to song writing and music.
"The Man" by Taylor Swift. This song is about men and how they think they are better than women. Throughout the song Taylor writes about how much easier life would be if she was a man. Men being better than women and more powerful is a common stereotype that people still to this day use and believe. Taylor Swift being famous and successful as a woman was not as easy as people would assume it to be, so this song shed light on gender equality and the stereotype that men are better.
"Black or White" written by Micheal Jackson was a song released revolving around all the stereotypes on skin color. This song expresses that no matter your race or skin color we're all people. In this song he expresses that people should look beyond skin color and just enjoy each other presence. This song, to this day, is still one of Micheal Jackson's biggest hits due to his message that is intended by it.
As a teenage girl my feelings are all over the place, just like everyone else. But a common pattern I see is that when you try and tell someone how you feel they believe you are being overdramatic because you are a girl. A common stereotype is that girls are fragile and emotional, and boys do not cry. But that is not necessarily true. When it comes to stereotypes and my film, my main actor is a teenage girl. This teenage girl is hurt and sad, but she is not overdramatic like everyone makes her out to be. She is just a girl with genuine feelings needing comfort.
Feelings whether you are a girl or boy are allowed to be felt and they should be felt without being told they are overdramatic. The opening of my film shows a hurt girl who just needs comfort rather than hurtful words. Some stereotypes can be funny but when they can impact people you always just want to think.
