Blog Post #14- Mise en scene

Mise en scene is the placing on stage and the visual things that are placed on camera. Mise en scene does not include technical choices but instead location, setting, costume, make-up, set design and properties.

The location and setting are important when it comes to mise en scene because the audience members are meant to adapt to locations in specific ways. The location and setting of a shot help audience members understand what the area is like. If the weather is cloudy or sunny that will help determine what mood is meant to get across. For example, in this picture the location is foggy and dark. The mood from this scene will be sadder and angrier compared to happy and cheerful.

Costume and makeup in a shot helps with understanding the personality of a character. It demonstrates their age and culture along with the time period the scene takes place in. In the picture it shows the way characters from Bridgerton dress. The TV show set place in the years 1813-1827. The costumes the characters wear tell the audience members that. People now in 2024 do not wear outfits like that, instead they wear jeans and a shirt or shorts and a shirt. With the costumes fitting the dress attire from the 1813s-1827s it gives the audience members an understanding that this show does not take place in recent years.

Set design and properties is the way the set is decorated with props. In this scene during scream the characters are surrounded by the history of scream. All the items in this room, have a significance to the past scream attacks. This room and the props in it are an important feature for audience members to pay attention to. The scream costumes in the back that are lite up show all the killers there have been. This room is a memorial for all the killers and has a message for the viewers.

When I use Mise en scene throughout my film the costuming will play a huge part. I want my viewers to understand that my movie will take place in the current year, 2024, and that my protagonist is a teenage girl between the ages 16-18. For props, if the scene is in the protagonist bedroom, I would use props that signify that the bedroom belongs to a teenage girl.
