Being a Junior in High School, I've seen the people I have known for years grow up and find a newer version of themselves. As years pass people grow up. Coming-of-age refers to the point in your life between the transition from teenager to young adult.
In coming-of-age movies they show the struggles, consequences, challenges and responsibilities that come with the transition. The protagonist is always put through a series of events that are eye opening, requiring change. There are many different ways to make a movie fall under the category coming-of-age.
One common scenario is identity crisis. During these movies the protagonist typically doesn't know what they want to do with their lives and go back and forth trying to figure out what they like. These films show personal growth and take viewers through a time period of uncertainty.
Another typical coming-of-age themes is romance. During coming-of-age romance films the protagonist finds a love interest which is typically their first love. During the film the couple goes through obstacles and enter the next stage of their lives.
You'll typically find a major change or milestone take place in a coming-of-age film. The protagonist
goes through something major, and the movie shows their development. For example, a death from someone close to them. This is a major change that can affect a person deeply and the movie or series shows how that person deals with that. Another example could be a milestone like graduating high school. The film or series can show the protagonist and what they do next as they enter the world as an adult.
Coming-of-age is a genre for my opening scene because it's something that I'm confident with. I want to show a teenage girl entering the point in her life where she's lost and confused, an example of identity crisis. My protagonist will be stuck on what to do next and not necessarily recognize herself as a person.
