Blog Post #9- Camera Shots

In films, the angle shots used help demonstrate certain viewpoints with audience members. For example, a point of view shot shows audience members what the character is looking at. And an over the shoulder shot is used typically through conversation. For my opening scene I would like to bring in multiple different shots. These could be an establishing shot which shows the location and the time of day. An Ariel shot which is just an overhead shot looking down at a scene. A two shot which shows two characters. Mid-shot and close-up shot. All these angle shots demonstrate different point of views.

The season one finale of the tv series "The Summer I Turned Pretty" uses this long shot which is showing a wider view of two characters. This shot is also an example of two shot which is the camera shot where it shows two characters. Both these camera shots require you to read the body language of the two people. In this camera shot you can tell there's easily chemistry between the two and it looks like they're about to kiss. The purpose of this shot is to give audience members that feeling of what's going to happen next.

During my opening using a long shot camera angle helps give my audience members an understanding of what's around and what to expect the setting to look like while still keeping the main focus on the character. That's the main difference between a long shot and establishing shot. A long shot shows characters along with the setting, balancing both the characters and their surroundings. However, with an establishing shot the main focus is the location and setting. When it comes to scenes with the intentions of showing off the location, I would use an establishing shot. But if my purpose of the scene is to show a character's full body and what the area around looks like, I'd use a long shot.

When I begin my filming, I'll do multiple takes trying out different camera shots trying to find the one that best demonstrates the point trying to be made. When it comes to the editing portion, I rather have multiple takes to choose from with different angles rather than just one that I'm unhappy with. For example, I plan on incorporating these different camera shots to express the chemistry between two people or to give my audience a better chance to get an understanding.
