Blog Post #20- Clean vs. Dirty

 This is the bedroom my opening scene will take place. This is the bedroom of my protagonist. When we begin filming the room will be dirtier and less organized. Below is my example photo and why a clean room vs messy room is important.

DISCLAMER: THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE!!

This is an example of a clean room. A clean room typically shows character traits of organization and liking things to be a certain way. It shows a person who is very detailed oriented and finds enjoyment with a clean environment. People who maintain a clean room have time and sometimes just work better with a cleaner environment. 

This is an example of someone with a messy room. A messy room can signify loss of motivation and laziness. A person who is struggling with their mental health will not care to much about keeping up with a clean room. In some cases, a messy room can be a cry for help rather than just slacking. 

Do not get me wrong, just because someone has a messy room does not mean their mental health is crap. But in the case of my film that is what it is supposed to symbolize. 

A person's bedroom is also supposed to show who they are as a person. This is because it is personalized the way they want it. So, the brighter of a color scheme will not only signify the character is young but also that they are usually happy. However, if the walls are darker and the color scheme is more moderate it shows the audience members that the character is mid-teens or older. As you mature brighter colors do not come off so flattering like they did when you were younger. 

This is relevant to my opening scene because my protagonist will have a messy room. Her room is meant to be a sign that she is not okay and that things are not easy for her. The mise en scene throughout the scene will help the viewers understand that. It is meant to give the feeling of confusion on how someone could let their room get that bad. This is the opening shot, so it has to set the mood for the rest of the scene and opening. Not only will the props throughout the room stand out but so will the lighting.
