Blog Post #21- Costuming

Costuming in a film is the outfit that the character wears. Costuming helps with enhancing the storytelling and to help with creating a more visual representation of the time period and the setting of where the scene is taking place.

When it comes to costuming and films, costuming is important. Costuming can show the type of personality the character has. Outfits and the type of style a person has is a way of expressing themselves because they are able to pick out what they wear. Costuming also helps with the audience members understanding the type of person that character is.

For example, when you see someone wearing a bright pink outfit that is tight you know that the person is most likely confident and cocky. Like Sharpay Evans in "High School Musical". Her style is bright and dramatic giving audience members the idea that she is cocky and feels entitled. She wears colors that stand out because she likes the attention she is given.

But then there are characters like Lara Jean from the movie "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" where her outfit is more neutral colors. By her wearing more neutral colors, it signifies that she might not want attention. By wearing colors that blend in more does not give her much attention. She just wants to be left unbothered.

The costumes that the characters wear help the audience members connect better and understand who they are as a person. Outfits are just one of the ways that allow the characters express themselves.

Costuming is important to my scene because it will play a big part in my viewers understanding what my protagonist is like. I have her wearing baggy clothes and more neutral colors because she just wants to be left alone. She is not the social type and just wants to go about her day without being bothered and messed with. This will also help my audience members understand that this is filmed in a more recent time period, hence the reason they are able to wear whatever they want even if it does not look neat and put together.
