Blog Post #39- Copyright Research

For my film I want to limit the use of dialogue. Dialogue is an easy way for my actors to mess up or poorly act. Some people just cannot talk in front of a camera without messing up and that is okay. To limit the amounts of mess-ups and to save the viewers from poor acting, I am using music for majority of my opening film.

Picking the song to use has many things to consider:

  • Make sure it fits the theme.
  • Clean.
  • Easy to edit.
  • Not copyrighted.
The last one is the most important. If the song I decide to use is copyrighted on my streaming platform, the final film will get taken down. To make sure I do not use a copyrighted sound I will be doing research.

To start the research, I went to YouTube website and found their copyright rules. However, that did not help much since it just popped up with the overview and the brief rules. The websites that I was checking out to make sure were not copyrighted told me to post a video private to the song I want to use, and it will be put through the copyrighted test.

At the beginning I wanted to use a Taylor Swift song, but all her music has its copyright protection and will be removed. Meaning I need to find a new song artist that fits the theme and will not get removed.

These are the songs I have limited it down to:
  • "Fine Line" by Harry Styles
  • "Stay" by Rihanna, Mikky Ekko
  • "Sparks' by Coldplay
  • "Sunsetz" by Cigarettes After Sex
  • "Sarah" by Alex G
  • "Scott Street" by Phoebe Bridgers
All these songs have the same theme. They give off the same feelings of my film. It all just comes down to the one that passes the copyright test and best fits the tone.
